Five Corners is one of Jersey City’s oldest crossroads. Summit Avenue, Newark Avenue and Hoboken Avenue come together here, and parts of the junction follow the route of the old Newark Plank Road that once carried traffic between Jersey City and Newark.
Summit Avenue is older still. It runs along the ridge of the Hudson Palisades and follows a Lenape trail once used between Communipaw on the bay and settlements to the north; in the 1600s Dutch settlers travelled the same line between Pavonia and Bergen. Today it is County Route 617, running from Communipaw Junction through Journal Square and the Heights into Union City.
As the county seat of Hudson County, the neighbourhood is anchored by the landmark Hudson County Courthouse and the county administration building on Newark Avenue, with the Five Corners Branch of the Jersey City Free Public Library right at the junction. South is Journal Square and its PATH station; west, India Square and the Little Manila shops along Newark Avenue; north, the Heights.
